What is the difference: Professional vs. Personal Testers?

Many personal alcohol testers are available, generally ranging in price from €10 to €129. While inexpensive, these novelty products possess significant limitations.

Several serious drawbacks accompany the use of low-cost products:

  • False positive readings
  • Cannot distinguish between alcohol and some other substances while fuel cell testers are alcohol-specific
  • Relatively short life
  • Less accurate than fuel-cell devices

Calibration concerns with novelty products

Given the manner in which novelty testers are marketed (internet or retail), many users of these novelty devices are not instructed regarding the need for calibration, and many of the devices cannot be calibrated due to their inexpensive design. Therefore, breath sample test results using novelty devices may become inaccurate and misleading over time if they are not calibrated periodically.

Unlike novelty products, all MTC Healthcares models are precision instruments. They are fuel-cell based, DOT-approved, and are high-quality, accurate, alcohol-specific, and reliable, with a life expectancy of 4 to 8 years and virtually no limit on usage or number of tests. They can be easily calibrated (or calibration-checked), and are fully supported by comprehensive full-time factory technical support programs and training.
